Academics

Academic Progress

Student must maintain satisfactory academic progress toward a “Specific educational or professional objective” or the student will be out of status. A reinstatement would need to be filed.

Authorized Early Withdrawal

If you should have any problems such as medical or financial that prohibit you from continuing your enrollment, you must notify the international advisor in advance. If you notify us in advance and you are approved for withdrawal, you will be given a 15 day grace period to leave the United States. If you withdraw and do not notify your international advisor, you will be considered immediately out of status.

Enrollment Requirements

All international students in F-1 and J-1 status must be enrolled full time during fall and spring semesters.

Undergraduate Students must enroll in and complete 12 credit hours every fall and spring semester.

Graduate and Professional Students must enroll in and complete 9 credit hours every fall and spring semester.

  • Graduate Students with a .25 assistantship (10 hours per week) must enroll in and complete at least 9 credit hours every fall and spring semester
  • Graduate Students with a .50 assistantship (20 hours per week) must enroll in and complete at least 6 credit hours every fall and spring semester
  • Student workers must enroll in and complete 9 credit hours every fall and spring semester

Summer is considered vacation so there is no full-time enrollment requirement.

Part time enrollment is allowed only when a student can document medical problems (which must be significant and documented by a physician) or when the student is in his/her final semester (only need 1 or 2 classes to complete degree).

F-1 students maintaining the requirements for Good Academic Performance are registered every semester in the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).  Auditing or withdrawing from a course(s) does not count toward the full-time requirements.  Students must COMPLETE (earn a grade of A, B, C, D, or F) the required number of credit hours every Fall and Spring semester to maintain immigration status.

Part-time enrollment must be authorized in advance by the international advisor and entered in the new SEVIS database. Failure to do this will cause you to violate your legal status in the U.S.

Online and Distance Education Courses

No more than one course or 3 credits can be counted toward the full course of study requirement. If you are already enrolled full-time, you may take additional online courses.

Program Updates

A new Form I-20 is required when you have a change in plan (major) or program (college).  You will need to contact the Office of Admissions and Records at the time of change or correction.  A major change is a reportable event in SEVIS.
