Student must maintain satisfactory academic progress toward a “Specific educational or professional objective”. Failure to do so will cause a student to become out of status. A reinstatement must then be filed.
Authorized Early Withdrawal
If you should have a problem, such as medical or financial, and you cannot continue your enrollment, you must notify the international advisor in advance. If you notify us in advance and you have a valid reason for withdrawal, you will be given a 15 day grace period to leave the United States. If you withdraw and do not notify your international advisor, you will be considered immediately out of status.
All international students in F-1 and J-1 status must be enrolled full-time during fall and spring semesters.
Undergraduate Students must enroll in and complete 12 credit hours every fall and spring semester.
Graduate and Professional Students must enroll in and complete 9 credit hours every fall and spring semester
- Graduate Students with a .25 assistantship (10 hours per week) must enroll in and complete at least 9 credit hours every fall and spring semester
- Graduate Students with a .50 assistantship (20 hours per week) must enroll in and complete at least 6 credit hours every fall and spring semester
- Student workers must enroll in and complete 9 credit hours every fall and spring semester
Summer is considered vacation so there is no full-time enrollment requirement.
There are a few times when you may be enrolled part-time. This includes medical problems (which must be significant and documented by a physician) and the final semester (if you only need 1or 2 classes to complete your degree).
Any part-time enrollment must be authorized in advance by the international advisor and entered in the new SEVIS database. Failure to do this will cause you to violate your legal status in the US.
Online and Distance Education Courses
No more than one course or 3 credits can be counted toward the full course of study requirement. If you are already enrolled full-time, you may take additional online courses.
A new Form I-20 is required when you have a change in plan (major) or program (college). You will need to contact the Office of Admissions and Records at the time of change or correction. A major change is a reportable event in SEVIS.
